Moreton Bay oil spill

Moreton Island beaches were declared clean in May 2009 after a massive clean-up effort following the oil spill in March.

About 2500 people worked on the clean-up, with around 3000 tonnes of oil-contaminated sand removed from Moreton Island.

The oil spill occurred on 11 March 2009, when 250 tonnes of oil escaped from the container ship Pacific Adventurer and washed up on Sunshine Coast beaches, Bribie Island and Moreton Island.
